IC 405 is the result of the chance encounter of the star AE Auriga and the dust and gas of the nebula.  AE Auriga is receeding at almost three time the recession rate of the dust and gas.  The blue region is primarily dust with very little gas and the red is ionized gasses.  (Burnham).
